I caught this rare moment the other day and had to snap a shot. It looks like a couple of chickens taking a simple dust bath. The catch is that the one on the left is my head rooster, Kristoff. It was so cute to see him enjoying himself with one of his hens beside him. He is a good rooster and always on guard with the flock. It's nice to know that he finds time to take a break and enjoy once in a while.
The purpose of dust baths for the chickens is to not only clean their feathers but more importantly to smother any types of "bugs" that might be trying to harbor themselves on their bodies. I've been blessed enough to not have battled mites or lice in my chickens, but good dust baths help keep things like that at bay.
