About Me

I am currently a homestead wannabe (smiles).  We moved to a 5 acre plot of land in the late summer of 2007 and have been slowly learning to live a more simple life.  We have a long way to go, but oh what fun!  I homeschool our son (Homestead Boy, AKA Sweet Pea) who is currently 7 and in the 1st grade.  I would have it no other way.  My husband has three other children ages 18 to 24, each with different moms.  The oldest and youngest of the children lived with us off and on over the years and both just recently moved out last year.  The eldest has an apartment of her own, the middle child lives with her mother, and the youngest has been off to boot camp to serve in the Army.  We were married December 15, 1993.  The time does fly and I can't believe it has been that long ago.  We both have some interesting pasts behind us and hopefully as this blog grows I will get the chance to share our testimonies.  God really is awesome and we couldn't imagine life without Jesus in our hearts and home.

We tried for 8 years to conceive and were finally blessed with our little man.  With the older children gone, we wanted to be able to fulfill the purpose of this bigger house we moved to.  We realized that the dream of being able to adopt children into our home was going to be possible.  After much research, thought and prayer, we decided to open our home up to foster children.  We have some friends that are dear to us that ended up adopting a family of 4 that had been fostered and then available for adoption.  We learned of the great need to keep sibling groups together.  How sad to not only be separated from your parent(s), but then your siblings as well.  We have completed all of our classes and passed all the needed background checks.  We are currently waiting for final approval before they grant us a license.  We are trusting in God to place the right children with us and for the future possibility of adopting (not necessarily those we foster).  Sweet Pea is all kinds of excited, but we have to keep reminding him that we are just helping to watch these kids until their mom and/or dad gets better and they can go home again.  I'm not sure who will get more attached, us or him, but it will be a joyful experience none the less.

I'm not yet fully sure what this blog will transpire into.  My hope is to have yet another place for moms and others to share in our journeys.  We all have our spheres of influence and I come across so many neat and interesting things that I wanted to have a place to share them.  Along the way I will most likely entertain the thought of ads and affiliate links on this blog.  It would be nice to have some pocket change and if it is unsuccessful, it will be no big deal because I mostly want to share what is happening in our little corner of the world.  I am brand new to blogging so I have a lot to learn and am looking forward to it.

I'm glad you stopped by and hope you made it this far in this nice long intro.  I do have a habit of babbling on.  I'm sure there will be additions and deletions as I learn and grow with this blog.  I hope you can learn something as time goes by and more informative entries are made.  I have had a lot of fun learning the different ways to keep a garden (still learning) and especially how to preserve the harvest.  I am looking forward to learning more about preserving foods and even more excited for when we can have our own chickens and goats!  Our neighbor has chickens and Sweet Pea absolutely adores them.  We thought we would have some by now, but we must put up a fortress to protect them because of where we live and all the neighbor dogs (who REALLY like chickens) run loose around here.  If you like what you see or would like to see me cover something, just post a comment or drop me a line via email and I will see what I can do.

blessings to all,
Homestead Mom

UPDATE:  it is now November, 2016.  I have not blogged in years.  I am back in the saddle.  I will be actively posting again and plan to add a few pages.  One of them being "Lessons from the Coop."  I also hope to become a Crew Member for The Old Schoolhouse to review homeschool curriculum.  Hope I get in! :)

UPDATE #2:  Sweet Pea is growing up.  Currently getting ready for 8th grade for 2017-1018 school year.  Little Bug is finally adopted and a permanent member of the family.  She continues PreK and may start Kindergarten early in the fall, we'll see.  It'll be a busy year! Oh, and I did get that Crew Review spot!  It is a lot of work but I enjoy it and love sampling the curriculum.  We have found some very nice stuff to use now and in the fall.
